Severin Roesen’s (American, b. Prussia, 1816–1872?) Still Life: Flowers and Fruit (1850–55), featured in The Met’s American Wing and on this cotton canvas zip pouch, represents the artist at his best. This exceptionally large still life depicts over a dozen varieties of flowers and fruits, which became more accessible thanks to 19th-century improvements in cultivation and shipping. As such, the inclusion of an exotic pineapple and pomegranate alludes to America’s bounty. Roesen was a German immigrant who fled the revolutions of 1848 for a more promising life in the United States.
